The CNN Freedom Project presents a week of programming focusing on child brides. The programme started on Monday, 28 May on NewsCenter with Isha Sesay. Robyn Curnow reports on a practice called ‘Ukuthwala’ which involves the abduction of young girls for marriage to older men in the poor area of the Eastern Cape, where Nelson Mandela was born. At a shelter near Lusikisiki, established to help and provide young girls who were abducted with an education, there are girls in their early teens. Many of these girls have not only been abducted and raped but have also been shunned by their families.
