South Africa’s decision to lend cash-strapped Swaziland R2.4 billion is sparking many heated debates. But the government says it has set conditions on the loan, in order to force King Mswati III to introduce political reforms and comply with IMF demands for fiscal reform.

Pro-democracy activists and ordinary citizens in Swaziland have been protesting for several months and urging South Africa and other countries to put pressure on Mswati to start talks aimed at bringing democracy to Swaziland. On 1 June, Sibongile Mazibuko, president of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers, led a protest that called on South Africa not to give support to the current Swazi government and the King.
