School principal beats pupil with a hosepipe

Please be patient while the player loads...

Shocking cellphone videos of two school children from Diversity High school in South Hills near Alberton, beaten by their teachers were circulated this week. The first video shows a Grade 8 boy, being beaten with a hosepipe by the school’s principal. The second video shot on a cellphone show a teacher forcing a pupil’s hand into a bucket of cold water and then striking the girl’s hands with a chalkboard duster.

If it was my child I would have hunt him down and hit him until his last breath. Can these savages just think for one minute if it was their children being beaten like that. Same goes with hospital staff that treat their patients as if they have no feelings, can you just put yourself in the situation where your either yourself or a family member is treated like that will they like that. Before you do to others just give it a thought if you would like the same done to yourself.

I agree with you Riekie. Firstly why is the media calling it corporal punishment, when it is a clear case of child abuse. He should be criminally charge for child abuse not just suspended. I grew up at school with corporal punishment, but it was not even close to this type of abuse shown on this clip. As Riekie said, had it been my child they would have no need to suspend him becasue he would not be around anymore. I hope the times follows up on this story, because I know if no one does he will probably get off a lot lighter than that poor kid. To the parents I say, dont let this go until that madman is behind bars.

This is not new to me,the videos from the phones are something else you must listen to the school children when their talk how the teachers are beating them in the classrooms, some use the rulers, canes, even a warm clap.We don’t say children are not supposed to be warned or disciplined but I am saying my kids coming from the school says he was been beating by a teacher in the way that Fat Principal.Mrs Angie Motshegwa will have to call Mr Cele to issue warrant of arrest for me.

These kids should know that they are being tortured.
If these people are at work on monday I think its a fair case for mob justice.

…same if a speedy prosecution re of assault and child abuse isn’t successfully for each occurence of this .

Does anyone know the name of the principal and teacher?

Well done to the kids (I’m assuming) who filmed this. Very brave of them under the circumstances. Now its the justice department’s turn to do their job. Don’t fail our kids.

these teachers should be treated as pedophiles they are just as sick…..they should never be allowed near children and should be incarserated for at least 5 years for this disgusting CRIME they have commited….but of course im sure they vote ANC so this will not apply to them….

wow wow wow, im deeply sickened and distrubed by what i have just seen. I completed my PGCE in 2010 hoping to become a teacher as teachers are people of insparation and hold the keys of each childs destiny. what I have just seen as a pure contradiction to the profession. wow. How do we espect South Africa to grow and flourish as a nation if the older generation is oppressing the future generation, and if school is not a place of safety where are our children to find refuge. im disgusted!!

This is a deeply, deeply disturbing video. I am shocked and appalled. I feel this country is in a terrible state. We have government schools that deliver a very poor standard of education – our maths and science matriculants rank among the lowest on the continent, not to mention, the world. Now, in this so-called ‘Model C’ school, there is this kind of barbarism. So, where are children to go in order to receive a decent education? I agree with the writers who have said this is a case of child abuse. Absolutely. This principal must be arrested.

George Marx

I went to that school as a child, it used to be Hoerskool JG Strijdom. Back then there were allot of trouble makers, and I bet there still are, but why can’t the teachers and the educational department deal with them?

Why not name and shame this guy in the news reports? Everybody should know who he is so that it can be known to his friends and family as well as future employers what he is.

The mother of this child, who has not commented on this, where is she? She sent a letter to the school to “punish” the child but does she condone the way this child was treated? Nobody knows.

I know the Department of Education will let him off, just move him to another school and all will be forgotten.

I think Mrs. Anita Maritz was one of the best principals that school has ever had, this would never have happened if she was still there.

This is totally unacceptable, he needs to locked up with the keys thrown away,

if any teacher did that to my child it will be the last pay check he enjoyed, I would have probably taken the same hose pipe and beaten the fat out of him and then let the law do their stuff,
If any Teacher cannot handle their jobs they need to get out instead of ruining young innocent lives.

We need to be kept in the loop about this story, that EVIL creature should have been be fired on the spot. No excuse he makes will help him to save his career, and if it does all who saw him in action on the news will want to know

THE HEAD MASTER ALONG WITH THE TEACHER MUST GET THE PUNISHMENT WHICH WILL SET A TREND TO ALL THE TEACHERS WHO ARE ABUSING THE CHILDRENS.

I HOPE THE LAW WILL TAKE THE MATTERS INTO ACCOUNT BY PUTTING BEHIND BARS THE ABUSERS.

My son is a 2010 matriculant from this school, he was forever complaining about the abuse of teachers. This is not new, i saw it with my eyes when i went to school one morning a white male teacher slapping a young coloured boy a with a hot clap on the face.

I am 39 years old and these kind of **** happened when i was in school and already back then there was a out cry against such behaviour by teachers let alone principals. I trust the Dept of Ed will respond and deal with the matter swiftly.

Renald

Much of the research conducted on school-based crime and violence in SA shows that this kind of punishment/behaviour occurs much more frequently than we are led to believe. School-based violence whether perpetrated by educators or learners should be seen a barrier to education and must be dealt with in the best and strongest possible terms. Schools as valued societal institutions are uniquely placed to undo the cycle of violence but sadly though, some educators like we have seen in the clip chooses to find themselves among the perpetrators. Not acceptable!

25 July 2011

sholeen

This is a total disgrace ..how in the world can a student be beaten up like that ..irrespective of what that child did ..that is no excuse for beating that child the way that principal did ..DIVERSITY HIGH is my former highschool since grade 6 up until i matriculated in 2009 and not once whilst other principals was there did this happen ..Maboya has no excuse for what his done because there is no excuse honestly speaking legal measures must be followed.

25 July 2011

It is destrubing to see such acts of violence perpetrated against our children. Teachers around our country need to know that such days are gone for ever. We as a society must protect our children against that by taking firm action against the perpetrators of child abuse.
Our children need quality education offered by loving and caring educators in a safe and violent free environment. Come on guys, let us do what is right now. these children are our “Gold” and they need us now!

25 July 2011

Lucky Moropeng

Let us be the responsible parents… no one has died of sjamboking. Little punishment cultivate fear and respect in children. If God approves it who are you to condamn it… Our children are very spoiled and over whelmed by these freedom and Rights. Nowonder we are having sick nation. Look at our school children now…. Pregnant, HIV, weak minds, high failure rate, etc. bacause of the society we are faced with today.

A little warning is enough to put back a child in a classroom and to respect his/her well being!! Here we are today… soober and sound.. because someone showed us the direction at our early tender age and we respected that and followed the rule…

moAfrika what’s wrong?? leave this poor principal alone!!

25 July 2011

Shireen

Are these 2 teachers educators or abusers? they are probably so frustrated in life , to abuse our future youth of today. It is the parents responsibility to discipline their children and not the school teachers. It is most upsetting to find the school principle hitting the kid with the hosepipe, he needs to be hit back with the same hosepipe and expelled from his teaching profession.

25 July 2011

Greg

It is sad to see a principal resort to such retrogressive measures. Certainly an investigation is needed to objectively establish the facts. I grew up in the 70’s & 80″s in a country where corporal punishment in schools was legal and metted out with proper checks and balances. I was the recipient of several canings including the hughly memorable six lashes which was the absolute limit that could be given. Did I see it as abuse? No. Did I jack up my socks? Yes. The ways of instilling and cultivating discipline in schools is an inexhaustable debate but one that needs to be discussed without all the emotion.

25 July 2011

Elaine

This kind of behaviour cannot and should not be tolerated on any level. Thank god both children with cell phones had the savvy to film what they were witnessing. I hope the evidence will be used to fire the headmaster and teacher and add them to a list of child abusers so they may never work in the profession again. It is time parents stand together – shoulder to shoulder – and root these elements out of the education system and into the prison system to which they clearly belong.

I am disgusted at this video, I was a student at the JG, and We had Anita Maritz as pricipal. We knew where we stood wtih her. She NEVER did anything like that! I have heard so many bad stories about the school in the last year, from students that currently attend this school. Who the hell does this pricipal think he is! I would beat him back with that hose pipe! this is sickening, yes all schools have “naughty, disrespectful children” but that does not give anyone the right to beat a child like this man did! It is disgusting to know that a school that was once good has turned to this!

Students are worried about going to school, because of this. This “THING” that beat the student should never be allowed any where near children again!

The parent of this child is a personal friend. She and her family are very traumatised and are handling this matter as best as can be expected on advice from her attorney. Hopefully justice will prevail and no other child in any school will be put through such abuse.

My son was also in that school, i had many heated arguments with Mr Maboya, i have even written to the education department reporting the way my son was treated and spoken to , up until today there has been no response to any of my emails. I had one of the teachers arrested for hitting my son. i have taken him out of the school. i was told that im raising a criminal and that the deputy principal even told my son his a rude racist rubbish and that i should enroll him in a white only scholl

what kind of principle and the teacher hurting the kid with those stupid punishment ? are these teachers and principle idiots with no brains to hurt the kids rather give them a detention for an hour . TO SCHOOLS IN GAUTENG TO ALL STAFFS BETTER WATCH OUT WORST THING MIGHT HAPPEN BAD THING .RATHER TEACH THEM (THE CHILDREN) SOME RESPECT AND DISCIPLINE AND IF THEY DON’T LIKE IT SENT THEM A NOTE OR REPORTS TO THE PARENTS OR GIVE THEM DETENTION AFTER SCHOOL FOR AN HOUR .

Totally shocked!!! There’s no way I’d relinquish my parental duty to discipline to anyone – exactly in avoidance of such abuse of “permission”.

Boths teachers should be criminally charged regardless of the DoE’s stance.

25 July 2011

Ronnie

Like most parents, I am shocked and outraged, but we must recognise that this is the tip of the iceberg – think of the learners made pregnant by educators and many other atrocities. Time to clean uop the education system.

25 July 2011

Zimasa Kala

Lucky, I cannot fathom any responsible adult giving the response you have given. Yes, as a black kid I got my fair share of hidings, both at school and at home. Yes, I turned out to be a fairly well adjusted and responsible member of the SA society. I am also a mother to 2 girls that I would never under any circumstances allow to be subjected to what is contained in the video.

Growing up I probably got up to all sorts of mischief that did not please my parents and teachers. HOWEVER! No one ever had to resort to the extreme nature of violence unleashed on those helpless young ones in disciplining my peers and I. What is depicted in the video is abuse period! No excuses. Those kids are left in the “care” of those adults all day 5 days a week. Delinquent youngsters would probably bunk school – I would too if I were subjected to that.

Since you are so “understanding” and accommodating, it would be interesting to have your view on what is abuse – murder? Consider that those children’s spirits (witnesses included) may just as well have been murdered! Imagine the trauma of being in the same room when that takes place.

Man, I hope you’ve just been Lucky in your life, hence the easy-go-lucky attitude towards such a clearly disturbing occurance. I do wish that neither you nor your loved ones ever have to experience such hurt (physical and emotional) and fear (even as a witness)

Hi all,

I was a student @ this school, Matriculated in 2003 when Anita Maritz was the Principal. I’m not condoning the behaviour but, I was also a little difficult student. I @ some days had Anita wanting to “kick me every now and again. What I’m trying to say is, student sometimes provoke such behaviour and we are too quick to judge when we get what we asked for. I would like to know what the kid did to get such a beating. From what i have heard ” the mother of the Kid requested that the kid be disciplined because she had had enough, the kid Bunked classes, bunked school, came in Late to classes” . She couldn’t discipline the kid anymore, so I’m assuming the principal did what he though was best as requested. It was wrong yes! But it happened…… So before you judge_ if u are a parent ask yourself (are you teaching your kid to do good out there, respect elders the way he/she should). Does he/she respect you at home? coz if she/he does not do that, then there is no way he/she will do the same out there and will get such treatment from People take discipline in another Level……??? Just saying!

First, these are not even teachers, more like scum. I mean that not even animals do this. It is a good thing that their names and the video evidence are out there – at least the world can now see what are schools are like.

I doubt if they will be fired because some danw lawyer will get them off the hook – they will argue their rights but ignore that of the victims.

Hopefully street justice will prevail in this instance.

i was a pupil in this school from 2001 to 2006 and if there is one thing the teachers knew was never ever to try that with any pupil because they would have lost there life or end up in hospital back then we would look out for each other and my fellow pupils would never have stood by and watch this happen okay our principle at the time which was mrs anita maritz would from time to time walk around with a shumbok but would never use it on anyone and i can truly say that the woman did install discipline in us i am the person i am today because of her guidance even though back then i did not like what she done but today i can see how she helped all of us and when i found out that she had lift the school i told myself that the school is done for as for me there is one thing for curtain all the teacher that i came into contact with knew that i would never have stood still for that to happen to me there is a teacher that got first hand experience i wont name any names but he knows himself but this has to stop…..

Thx to all for your encouraging comments. I am the mother of the Grade10 pupil. I had just lost my eldest child (suicide), then the video a few weeks after we buried Liyah, I wrote the school abt my girls needing ongoing councelling and therapy and was shocked that the same teacher knew abt our situation. my daughter handed in homework which was not fully completed. Was it really necessary to inflict such extreme cruelty? Might I add that lastyear my kids told me that the female teacher in the vid pulls them by there ears and pinching them under their armpits! my complaints were ignored then too. bravo to my daughters friends for recording the clip! im proud of my daughter too for keeping her head high and being brave. Even though she has suddenly lost friends and feels victimised and stigmatised and seen to be looking for fame perhaps. We are just a normal family trying to cope and deal with a host of experiences which will hopefully turn out for the better. thank you. E.

We’re having a sick nation because of heartless citizens like you. There is a big difference between “little punishment” and being kicked and hit with a hosepipe. It’s because of people like you that the Goverment had to empower our kids, because clearly you dont know the difference between punishment and abuse. Surely if I get respect from my kids it should’nt be because they fear me, it should be because I’ve earned it.

According to me God is a God of peace, not violence. If you want to support Maboya you’re welcome to go lick his wounds in prison.

I wish a teacher or principal can try that on my child when my child is in high school. I will kill that person and burn them up and then put the ashes on their mothers door step. And then I will sue the department of education and the school for the few cents that they have!!!!!

Yes, the apartheid masters have taught the teachers of today well – how to beat and abuse children and with little knowledge about teaching. Strangely, when I was at school it was always the teachers of afrikaans origin that were the worst Sadly I must say that this will still continue for many years as these failures of society and servants of the state will be retained due to our law.

I wonder how do they treat their own children or do they only take it out on someone else.

If the teacher has been doing this since 2003 (one of the previous comments), then why has nothing been done about it. This just shows that teachers stand together when it comes to child abuse. The cases has also most probably been reported but I am sure that the teachers stood together and lied through there teeth to show that they can do what they want. I am also sure that this is not the only school where this is practised. It is also not a case of colour.

Yes, there are many good teachers out there that are struggling to give good service but it is this type that give the teaching proffession a bad name. Even when my children were in a private school, of the teachers were useless and yet protected.

27 July 2011

Randall

Spare the rod and spoil the child – anyone who recites this from the Bible obviously does not know what they are talking about. Please go read your Bible and see what the rod is used for. Then also quote that Jesus rebuked his diciples for chasing away the children be Heaven belonged to them.

I attended Diversity for half of my high school career. In that tim, I watched many teachers being victimised who were unable to anything about it. If they tried to do anything, they would be turned into the villian. I have seen kids walk out of detention, but the schoopl may not deal out any other kind of discipline. I do not condone abusive behaviour, but I wonder how far some teachers are being pushed. How can people give the whole school a bad name because of this incident? Shame on you! no wonder our education system is in such a mess. Teachers are human too. Put yourselves in the shoes of Diversity’s educators. You would never believe what some of them go through. Teachers in this country have no rights anymore. The pupils run the schools.

27 July 2011

Well hopefully this will go further……my child is also part of the Diversity High School and I cannot believe how his so called friends have stuck beside him….when no one else was prepared to take it further…….right is right and this is pure abuse………..they should also get rid of some more of the teachers that are practising racism in our school……maybe this should come to light at the next parents meeting………

Long way back my teacher John Ndlovu did more than what one see from that video and the abuse that was inflicted still lingers in my soul even today. Unfortunately then there was no deocracy to talk about but I feel to come clear that I also together with my class mates faced classroom genocides. The beating was unbeliavavble it was brutality not with a hose pipe but long freshly haversted tree branches sticks, a metre or so long, and one could have pains inflicted by such beatings for nearly 7 days from savage Ndlovu teacher. I am even proud to call him a teacher.

28 July 2011

I am not even proud to call that Ndlovu a teacher but just a criminal who abused us as young pupils, some of the pupils ended up leaving school just to escape his brutality.

So this scum has been around for a long time and none of the parents have done anything. The parents are therefore just as guilty. I notice that govermnet has neither done anything. I suppose although they are against it when the cameras are on them, they actually condone this type of behaviour.

Also, has anyone given the victims any form of counselling.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to bring back the death penalty – we already have two candidates.

I also notice that this episode has quitely left the news so that the children can be beaten in peace. How many other schools are there is this country that practices this type of behaviour.

Parents – do not just stand there. Remember that it is your children and your responsiblity to give the children a proper education. You also pay his/her salary. So by remaining quiet, you are actually paying someone to abuse your child.

Also, do not come with intimidation. Make a case against him. The children who captured this video should be hailed as heros and given royal treatment. We need more like them – God bless them.

My little sister goes to the school and she has been begging my parents to get her to another school because of the corruption done by the pupils. Cellphones are not allowed in the school( I wonder how they(pupils) managed to take those videos. I wish parents could attend school meetings just to hear what their children get up. They smoke drugs, bunk classes, have s#@x in the school toilets. Our teachers are fustrated and we should be working hand in hand with them in desiplining these children rather than judging. We used to get punished in the old days and we are what we are today because of that. These kids are not going anywhere in life because they do as they please. I think we should all stop pointing fingers and come up with solutions
