Residents of Coronation Park, Mogale City on the West Rand say they are desperate to move into RDP housing being set up in Kagiso. The predominately white residents spent hours queuing outside the Housing Department to apply for the low-cost housing, say it would be a massive improvement from their current living conditions which they describe as a squalor.
Frightening stuff, we seem to be adding to the problem rather than making inroads. The equity bill will add many more people to this situation.
The South African social assistance system must accelerate in assisting all the citizens. Ideally, it would have been nice if, in redressing the ambalances of the past, we add more black people to the group that lives above the poverty line while working to ensure that the existing economic circumstances do not deteriorate. Growing up in complete destitute it pains me to see an increasing number of impoverished white counterparts, while with better management we could have enough resources to take care of SA and perhaps have enough surplus to feed Bangladesh. Believe me, going to bed on a hungry stomach and yet not knowing where you will get food the next day is not nice. You just hope that no one else will go through the same experience.
