All around Johannesburg modern day hunter-gatherers earn a living turning other peoples trash into their own form of treasure. Sorting through rubbish bins on collection days these small time entrepreneurs gather trolley loads of recyclables and take them to recycling plants across the city. At the plants, which are mostly owned by independent start-ups, the vendors receive cash for the plastics, papers, metals and glass which are then sold on or transformed into everyday reusable products.
