I agree more with Tshepo. The purpose of art is to be an expression of self and of society. It cannot be curtailed by politicking and should not be curtailed even by seemingly harmless speeches.
Artists have a social responsibility to engage with the ills of society and an even bigger responsibility to challenge it in their work.
Furthermore, if South African artists don’t do it within in the South African community, other artists will do it for us, sooner or later.
Arttsts should, resist, rebel and agitate as well as soothe, just as we did under apartheid.
