Please be patient while the player loads...

In this two-part interview episode of the Political Notebook, The Times’ Editor Ray Hartley speaks to ANC Youth League President Julius Malema about the nationalisation of mines, shoot to kill and his growing reputation.

Here’s a recent quote by Malema on the nationalisation debate: “We are not scared of debate even on complex matters we do not understand.” Enough said.

He starts off quite impressive, quite believable, but devolves into a mad kind of militancy where he’s got answers and can’t bear to listen to the probing questions. I wonder how much power he actually has.

@Sizwe
You think like a sheep that need a sheepdog to lead its way. Who do u call masters of slavery? You are mind programmed. Wake up, you remind of the youth that go to war thinking that they are fighting for their country while at the same time destroying innocent ppl, and protecting the businessmen and politicians, When they go back home with no limbs , they are hailed as heroes. the same coutry that sent them to fight will be preaching human rights, at the same supplying arms to make money. Check who benefited from Armsdeal and how many families have been destroyed becos of greedy demons called politicians life will be better without all politicians with their greed.

Asavela

Malema is a stupid together with the ANCYL,because they don’t know what the YL was formed for, according to my knowledge Mr. Mandela, the late Comrades Sobukwe,Sisulu,Tambo,Mhlaba, etc….they formed the league only because the then leaders of the organization were not doing exactly what they were suppose to do and after so many years a very student uneducated person is killing what our fathers fought and killed for.

2rdly I remember when the later Peter Mokhaba was YL leader when he sang KILL THE BOERS<KILL THE FARMERS, the then ANC president told him to stop and he did so because he knew and understood what the YL was formed for,now because of this stupid Malema there's a rift within the organization that is going to take time to divide them,AYIHLOME.

No-one will invest in a company that is 60% controlled by the government. It is a big world. There are many other countries and companies to invest in.

No-one engages Julius Malema in a proper way. Everybody seems to try and lead him into giving the sensational answers. No-one wants to discuss real economics with peoples´ self-interest and many other options and past history with him.

Julius Malema will not be able to re-invent economics all by himself in the ANCYL way. It will not be possible. The world of successful economics has been developing for thousands of years. Julius Malema will not be able to alter the way economics work. He learnt a lot of new things already. Some-one will have to explain the proper workings of developmental economics to him. He will see the successes in countries following market based principles and he will understand and support it.

If no-one explains those principles to him, he will not get to know them.

It seems to me everyone is simply using him for their own sales purposes to sell their programs or videos.

@ Nicolaas

i like your thinking process, although i do not agree with your position. you are clearly a supporter of orthox economics and market-driven economic fundamentals. You are correct that no one in a bourgeois society will be keen to invest in a company with majority shares held by the governement as it limits the margins of profit maximisation because of the conflicting interests of goverment and individual capitalists.

You need to be aware, however, that nationalisation does not mena the end of capitalism, it is also nothing equal to socialism as you seem to sugest of Julius Malema. In my understanding, nationalisation as conceived by Julius Malema, it will still be capitalism driven by the interst of the elite bureaucracy in government – the newly acquired enterprised will still be subjected to the realities of the free market.

In criticking your market driven economics , I would say look back to what has happened to south africa since the advent of what is termed the 1996 class project which is characterised by the capital friendly macro-economic policies like GEAR, inflation targeting policies of the Reserve Bank etc. The poor (particularly black working classes) have paid a huge price for what you would like us to see as the panecea of all social and economic troubles SA is faced with.

Anyone who would want to suggest that by calling for the nationalisation of the mines, Julius is representing the interests of the working class better think again. you cannot conceive of a working nationalisation in the context of current economic fundamentals. If Julius a trully a champion of the working class interests he must call for the review of current economic policy frame work and a new industrial strategy within the context of a new economic policy that is driven by the needs of its people.

since the advent of GEAR and the subjection of SA economy into the so-called free market, south africa has become the most unequal country in the world with a new crop of black dollar billionaires to give a failing system credebility in terms of wealth distribution.

I can write the whole day in exposing the evils of the so-cqalled free-market economics, because there is nothing free and good about the free market.

15 November 2009

Comrade Trevor

Comrade Julius is very clear, he speaks the truth, even though at times, it is out of line, but the fact of the matter is, he says what most politicians fear to say….so ya.

these other sensationalists should stop lookig for work, and i think julius should stop creating employment by entertaining these clowns…if they want to write about ****, let them write about something else Like Zille facials {as they all worship her}…cuz julius is much more worth than that.

these racist should also just get a life, cuz most of what they are saying are motivated by the thought that they are superior, and that their language makes them better then julius, that maybe cant speak their english fluently…Y dont they speak my Zulu, sotho, or Xhosa and other african languages!!!!

Firstky, this guy has got no respect, I wonder if that’s the way democracy operates but to me he won’t make it to the ranks of Presidency, unless if we want our country (SA) to be like Kwampunzedl’emini-banana republic.

15 November 2009

Mompe

South Africans must start to accept that we are leaving in a democratic state where each an every indivisual is entitled to their own opinion, yes we might differ but that is axcatly what should happen in order to advance democracy in our country and that is not going to happen unless we start debating on issues raised and stop labelling fellow South Africans as monkeys and Chimpanzis.

On the issue of nationalisation of mines I disagree with you comrade Julius and this can always be debated but I am glad that you are not afraid to raise issues that are of national importance.

swearing at malema in your dying afrikaans language just shows the level of intellect and vocabulary at your disposal.very low.Malema has risen from the dusty streets of seshego to the accomplished roads of sandton. This shows us that this is a man of perseverence, and a will to suceed.he may have performed dismally in his final matric year but he didnt let this get him down.He embodies hope ,freedom of expression and the truth. You may not like what he says but by god he will stand by his words.all thet he does is in the best interest of all the population of south africa.

15 November 2009

Bongani

Comrade Trevor, apart from the racist comments these people r making, they have very good points.
Malema clearly doesnt know why the ANCYL was formed or what its about. All that malema is interested in is to reverse what apartheid did, he is just as racist as some of these people commenting here. I am also a black person, but in know that 2 improve this country that we love, we must treat each other as people not as black or white people. Colour is just a colour.

BEE and Affirmative Action is NOT working. It is a great thing that can balance what happened before we became a democracy. For example, if u go into a township how many people there benefit from being able to get into university easier, when they cant get a decent school education in the 1st place. No high-achieving people want to become a teacher and all good teachers move to private schools, because you earn so little so the education that our children get r not that great . The ANC must stop wasting money on things like transporting busloads of supporters to Zuma’s court cases and rather spend it on important things like teacher salary increases and better schools.

This is why i support DA, and i grew up in a township in the eastern cape. Helen Zille doesnt care about skin colour, she gets the job done. u might not like to hear this but the western cape has the highest literacy level and lowest unemployment level. ANC and ANCYL must take advice from her instead of complain that there are no black or female people in her cabinet. atleast she is doing a good job. how can the ANCYL call her sexist when the ANC has never had a female leader EVER?

Shame on you. Helen Zille has my vote

Thabo @ Lerato

Ironic how Julius is allowed to have an opinion, but when you share your views you are ridiculed. It is called an ad hominum arguement. Please ignore those critics, they do not know what they are saying. If they did they would aregue against your arguement, not against you as a person. The freedom we fought for also included freedom of speech. Julius has not said one thing of any substance ever. He rants and raves and a few immature, sheep mentality followers who would never amount to anything on their own have attached themselves to JM like limpits to a rock in the hope of some glory. I’m an old man now and have seen to much to be bothered by JM and Co except that they are disrespectful and have no real opinion about anything. They just shout mindlessly. I’m afraid the ANC has unravelled. My children and grandchildren do not know who to vote for anymore. If you are not connected to someone in power then you can forget about getting a chance. That is not equity, that is not freedom. I only wonder if Julius might have been a better leader if he had better opportunities.

When we voted Malema in bloem we knew what we were doing, when we voted Zuma in power we also knew what we were doing. As a movement, we are seeing results of our decisions everyday. The opinions being expressed here are just nonsensical waste of energy by minorities, and they are being recorded nor recognised by any formal structures in our country. Maybe you should go diving, hicking, or flying a kite. I would like to further suggest that the DA imperialistic bafoons and some of these cope lost coconuts look at their leaders (who is cope president again ????), and come up with more effective ways to be more politically competent. The power is with the people and not with Zuma and Malema, they simple represent our interests, and so far we are euphoric with thier leadership and political sharpness! If you cant read between the lines, then you are doomed! Long Live the spirit of Solomon Mahlangu Long Live ! Long Live Future President of South Africa Julius Malema Long Live !

WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE?

Young Jannie van der Merwe lives 10 houses from ET and goes to school at Ventersdorp.

At an interview with a school counselor he is asked what does he want to do when he grows up.

Answers Jannie:

“I want to be Julius Malema, Oom.”

Oom is taken aback but asks Jannie:

“Are you sure?”

Without hesitation young Jannie replies:

“Ja, Oom. I want to be Julius Malema!”

Why? Asks Oom.

“Because I could do what I want, have nice house in Sandton, and an nice car and I don’t need to pay for them. I’ll have ten bodyguards so the other boys could not mess with me, and even if I talk s..t, the president will support me!” AnswerS Jannie

“But what about transformation and Affirmative Action?” asks Oom. “I thought all those jobs are only going the previously disadvantaged!”

“Ja, Oom, we better check with Luthuli House, just in case.” says Jannie.

They phone Luthuli house and Sipho Tshabalala answers:

“So nice to hear from you, Jannie!”

“There is nothing to worry about transformation and AA.

We have been working on this for the last fifteen years.

Besides, by the time you grow up, Jannie, if everything is going according to plan, all of you Whites will be disadvantaged!”

Economics is a complex subject. While Julius is talking about nationalizing the mines, the exact opposite may be happening in practice.

This is what is stated on Bloombergs regarding Eskom today:

“However, Engineering News Online also understands that Eskom was seeking other forms of support, possibly involving private equity. A partial public offering, which would enable private individuals to buy shares in the group, was even under discussion.”

Congratulation to the ANC for discussing a proposal like that. Exactly the opposite of what Julius thinks may be the best for SA.

Exactly the opposite of what Julius is stating: Instead of the state nationalizing private companies, the state may now try and sell part of Eskom – that is 100% nationalized by the state – to private individuals.

See Julius: economics is a complex business. What is right is what is the best for South Africa, but, the best way is still competition in the open market: Eskom has to have very good results before private individuals will invest in it. That is the best way. Open market competition with government simply operating as a regulator and not as a central planner.

Ideology trumps food – like Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Idi Amin and Mugabe before him- JM’s way of thinking will end in national slavery, poverty, political pograms, purges and disaster, except for the elite. Command economies do not work – even for Spaza shops which are being undercut by immigrants such as Somali traders who understand market forces and gladly take advantage of the real freedoms in this country without an historical hangover of resentment.
Eskom is the biggest and most inefficient state -owned monopoly in the country. what does he think about that?
Mining and agriculture are primary pioneer industries that require an understanding of practical day to day skills and knowledge and have a high multiplier effect in the communities around them ( e.g. Tanzania – who have seen the light). Who does he imagine will be managing these mines? the collective cadres work force under instruction from COSATU?
Mining commodities is at the mercy of global markets and is a price taker . If you are not competitive – you go under.
“Owning” a hole in the ground does not mean that you can make a profit on a whim, by waving your hands or shouting to the masses. where is the capital investment for development to come from and the understanding of incentives, discipline and cost efficiencies to work underground?

Nationalization is a good idea , especially in this day of layoffs but its also an easy corruptible system, and given the ANC’s track record on nationalization I think they should rather talk about how its going to be managed if it happens. Yes while they mine owners are keeping their profit margin, they are also pumping that money back into the economy of South Africa, investing in opening up new businesses and creating new jobs, how many jobs that the ANC promised has not come through. The only way i see this working is if a board is set up comprising of equal amount of members from each of the top 5 political parties , to keep track of expenses and income, and most of all that no a single government official gets a cent, other than the job he is paid for by the tax payer to do.

Too many times ANC has been nationalizing properties and businesses for the purpose of BEE where mostly corrupt government officials pulled the benefit from it, how many farms that where bought by the tax payers money fell into the back pocket of some ANC fatcat?

Above all else nationalization must mean it belongs to all South Africans not the government or ruling party !!!
