SANEF chairperson Mondli Makhanya on journo arrest
Veteran journalist Mondli Makhanya who is currently the chairperson for South African National Editors Forum, expressed how he feels about the events which unfolded at the AVUSA premises when Hawks arrested Sunday Times journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika. Listen to our audio where Makhanya reflects on the dark days of apartheid…
Dr. John Gosling
Well said, Mondli! Apallingly ominous signs of an attempt to intimidate and silence the media on absolutely spurious charges. No article was published! What crime has wa Afrika committedd – to warrent a squad of Hawks to arrest him like some dangerous criminal? Is the ANC and the Hawks unaware that events such as these are immediately beamed around the world – in seconds? As you point out, in one fell swoop the Hawks are in the process of wiping out all the goodwill we gained during the World Cup – and cause the world to gasp in horror of what appears to be an emerging fascist state. It is important for you to know that MANY of us are totally supportive of the right to freedom of speech and support all your and others’ efforts to stop this dreadful threat to our democracy. However, should it come about, we will continue to support you all as you show up the sinister underbelly to the entire world of what oppression is occurring here in our country under this regime.
