Swine flu: Precautions for pregnant women

Please be patient while the player loads...

The swine flu death toll in South Africa currently stands at eighteen with half that number being pregnant women, said the National Institute for Communicable Diseases. Zandile Mbabela of The Times online spoke to Professor Barry Schoub of NICD on the fatal effects of the pandemic and precautionary measures.

This is a really good warning for us – especially pregnant women. They need to be very careful and even at the slightest chance of getting sick they should stay home and try to recover. And if they have flu symptons they need to get tested for swine flu immediately. Think about the babies that are dieing when pregnant swine flu mums die – this is like a double death toll. If this spreads more, and maybe I’m thinking too far ahead, but a generation could be killed before they’re born and birth rates would be affected. We need to stop this spreading, its serious.

This is really bad, my girlfriend is pregnene and working at the hospital..She can not just stay at home and not attent to her duties but at the same time our gorvenment states that we should not panic. I believe that SA has the ability and funds to purchase the recommended medicines and vaccines. how many lives should we lose untill something drastic is done. We the citezens need medicines and vaccenes not HOPE that things will get better.

I’m in my 3rd trimester, i’m battling a bad flu, I just think its sad that we have to pay so much (R 785) to test to this virus, what about those pregnant ladies who really cant afford it, I took the test & awaiting results, its really scarry.

Government’s response to Swine Flu has been really pathetic to say the least. First they stopped counting the number of people who are infected with the virus. As a result we don’t know how many people in the country are infected (surely you need statistics to design a proper response). Then they told the doctors that they should not test anyone when coming to consult with flu symptoms even if people request it. As a result many people are having to walk around with Swine Flu thinking that it is just the normal flu and in the process infecting many more. Our health system was also unable to detect the danger of the virus to pregnant women, as a result more than 12 pregnant women have died together with ther unborn babies. Why is it that government is unwilling to issue a directive that we should have mass testing, starting with groups such as pregnant women and those who have cronic diseases and then test everyone. If our healthcare system is good as governent keeps on claiming surely it should be able to accomodate such a mass testing. They keep on telling us that we must not panic so what must we do, wait to die?
