Moipone Malefane talks to Professor Sakhela Buhlungu

Please be patient while the player loads...

The backroom character, the clown and the sound-bite man – this is how Wits university professor Sakhela Buhlungu describes three of the leading contenders for the ANC presidency – Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and Tokyo Sexwale – in the run-up to the party’s December conference. He analyses the language and politics of manipulation being used by the those gunning for leadership positions and examines Mbeki, Zuma and Sexwale’s campaign styles.

Moipone,
This one is for your own consumption, not the public.

You could do well to give your guest more time to let him talk his way out a little without interuption.I am not sure whether this computer derived speech does affect the quality.
But otherwise a good job.

Good analysis Prof.
It is a real pity this JZ- President thing has robbed us of their different but complementary leadership styles.I was a bit disappointed when you said the departments are dysfunctional. This I thought was what the current President was strongest at.

You need somebody to charm the crowd with his charisma , like Madiba-and somebody to do serious work the like current president was doing , while Madiba gave us hope with his charisma and Madiba jive.I do not mean clowning but controlling the masses politically.

Do you remember the advert of fatis and monis?

The only person who has become a motherless child in all this “mess”are the ANC masses .I think what you see when JZ comes to the people is a stamp of approval.I still believe the current president is doing admin well.We still need a leader who appeals to our emotions and yet we need a philosopher and a thinker as well–methinks

If we open our eyes and our minds wider, we will be able to see the the see the tide which SA is drifting. African leaders, once they taste power, will not want to relinguish. they engage in all manner of tactics and dealings some of which are under hand and messy. the media becomes the enemy, political opponents become enemies rather than competitors.open political discourse is discouraged.democracy is redefined and the democratic space is narrowed to suit selfish political interests. the leader becomes a super human character who should be insulated against criticism. arrogance become a permanent trait. a coterie of blind political loyalists and hero worshipers, ready to to toe the line surrounds the supreme leader.history is awash with character suiting the the described tendencies. they strive to hang on and on until they become despotic. our revolution in SA should be mindful of such tendencies. that is why its necessary to have new people in positions of power at reasonable time junctions. brother thabo should be careful not to sink deeper into this political trap. lets learn to let go when we still have some semblance of credibility.

What I find interesting is that even ANC suppoters are batling to know what is happening within the party. There are so amny camps in the movemenet that it is difficult to tell who ir right and who is wrong. The greatest test for the ANC is to transform itself from being a liberartion movement to political party in government. The language they use and the style of party conduct resembles the bush era when the party was still outside. When will the party take the country into confidence and realise that we are matured we can make good decision for ourselves.I wish for the day when we as people of this country could go to the polls to elect an leader of our choice , not the one who suites the ANC) and know that his failures will be our failures. What I presently see is a movement divided along ideologies and many interests.
How I pray every night that Thabo Mbeki will learn to listen, listen to the masses.
What the Prof is saying is very much important and we should take not of the different kinds of leaders we are likely to have after 2009 elections. We need a revolution both with the ANC and outside.

Me thinks this argument should not even be taking place
1:The leader appoints himself through his involvement from grass root, like Steve(He built SASO and became its first president Biko,Nelson Mandela,Winnie mandela,Oliver Thambo

2:We never have a problem who should lead.People simply endorse him–Remember How Mandela became president of the country and that of the Anc after Tambo

3:This lobbying is the real problem–influential people lobby you because they want something from you which you must pay them back with during your reign

4:The current problem is that nobody has taken leadership to show himself and it looks like anybody who does so, is seen as revolting against the powers that be

5:People have simply given up to work in politics and joined big business—-That is the strategy of the imperialist.

6:A Zulu saying says :”When a dog has a bone in his mouth he will stop barking”How correct our forefathers were.

7:The president will show himself those who are lobbied must just forget for a moment and work for being endorsed by the people not the powerful few.

8:As you see there is no powerful few–It is exactly that what the people do not want.
9:Do I make sense though?

That`s a very good question which draws me into the debate since I haven`t been able to see the interview.

Tutu, after he was snubbed by Mbeki when he requested an audience and subsequently lambasted by the ANC remarked that he had a very cordial and amicable working relationship with deceased PW and to me that is the kind of a President that I would prefer to rule me.

PW regarded his enemies as his best friend and he goes to them and form working relationships. He did not like Mugabe but he had a trade relationship with him.

If a President is not interested in public figures like Tutu how will he know where is he and his government failing?

I need a President who will be patriotic and who is commit himself to national security, economy, social security and the country. That today we don`t have a unifying national anthem but one that has been foistered on us and a pledge for the country and the state irks me a lot because I know that even if I can compose a pledge it will not be accepted by the ANC or if I write to the President to ask that this country must have a pledge Iwon`t receive an answer.

Thank you for any rather obvious and valuable post. I’m surely a violator of lots of these procedures. I regularly discover me conflicted when producing a weblog put up because I see personally writing greater than most people need to read, but I experience that I be required to do the topic matter justice by thoroughly protecting it. I believe that by pursuing some of these policies I finish up reducing out important elements for the discussion. I guess you have to uncover a balance.
